Recently opened, the Yellowstone Heritage and Research Center contains a museum, archives, and library that trace and preserve the history of America’s first national park. Featuring over 200,000 items, the museum includes artifacts with exhibits related to natural science, geology, archaeology, paleontology, ethnology, biology, park flora and fauna, and fossils. The museum also features a historic park vehicle collection, historic park hotel furnishings, original Thomas Moran artwork, and over 80,000 historic park photos.
Affiliated with the National Archives, the center’s archives date back to the park’s U.S. Army administration and include more than 1,400 linear feet of records. The archives also house historic film clips, oral tapes, and park-related audio and videotapes.
The center’s research library boasts a rare book collection, numerous manuscripts, and more than 10,000 volumes of information pertaining to park history.The Yellowstone Heritage and Research Center is open by appointment Tuesday through Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM. All holdings must remain onsite to protect and maintain the park’s prized collection.
